Yields of Fray

“We are living in a fractious, fretful time we encounter fray in all its meanings but who reaps the yield? We often speak about escapism. Physical or psychological escape has become a much talked about form of self-care often due to very real social and political pressures that can feel ambient in one moment and become very real in the next.
While creating the work for Yields of Fray Leo Frontini has been living in Los Angeles. In the wake of the wild fires and subject to ICE raids, riots and an intervention by the national guard daily life in the city rumbles on, sprawling as it is you might not know of disruptions happening a neighbourhood away.
Avenues of escape have become paths to torment in turbulent times and fantasy and the imagination albeit illusory offer the only reliable forms respite. This is where Leo finds inspiration, in the space between memory, imagination and the subconscious. A motif from daily life, is like a thread to pull to weave another reality, untethered and ungainly these tableaux make material what exists in the artists’ subconscious, slightly out of reach.”
